Introduction: Social Media IS our society.

We are all born with certain traits and attributes, but what made us what we are today are also contributed by factors of nurture. It could be from our parents, teachers, boyfriends, girlfriends, partners, friends and acquaintances, in other words; our society.

There are different ways in which we interact with these people, from the most basic face to face interaction to SMS and telephone calls. But as we enter the generation of Web 2.0, our world is introduced to a whole new dimension of society, a virtual society which we know as Social Media.

In my own personal understanding, in the simplest form, social media is online interaction between people. However, the interaction itself is immeasurable.

Here’s another definition of social media I found on the net (best I’ve seen so far) :

Social Media could be use in various ways. There are varieties of topics that could be brought up in social media. In fact, it is limitless. Someone might talk about news and war in Syria, and others might just post a “selfie” or talk about their experience on a particular or even a mundane day. Some people uses social media to promote their businesses and/or reputations, some use it simply to communicate with their friends and acquaintances, others use it simply because everyone else is using it.

Similar to its uses, the effect of social media is pretty complex. It could either be positive, negative or even neutral. There are cases how social media contribute success to a person’s life (take the Biebs for example), sadly, there are also cases on how social media destroys one’s life (teenage suicide due to cyber-bullies).

With all being said, Social Media and The Self is going to be a platform where we (You and I) will talk through on how social media is not a mere representation of ourselves but it is a society that our society builds, builds our society, and ourselves. Also, we will be touching on discussions on the good and the bad of social media in shaping us to what we have become today.

Well, that’s it for now. Please do comment and give your take on this topic.

Cheers,

Val.

  1. I enjoyed reading this post, together with the explanation that you found online.I also agree wholeheartedly at the point which you mentioned social media allows interactions between people. Social media, in my opinion, is a channel of self-expression. It enables people to effectively communicate, dissipate information and gather data. I have positive views on social media as I believe in bringing people together across all borders regardless of culture or language. Like globalisation, it has its positive effects but also bring about some negative effects.

I do have some examples of the use of social media that you might be interested in:

There are also other Ted talks which you might find inspiring.

    Enjoy!

  2. From my point of view, I think social media is a platform where a lot of people use to feel accepted and belong in. I think in thesedays technology has quite becoming more advanced up to a point where it has become an integral part of our every day life, I’m talking about iphone, facebook, instagram, twitter and etc.

To relate to your discussion, yes it is right that social media has becoming more and more of an intangible community. It does have the power to influence us, for example if there is a recent new trends regarding a product : iphone 5 being shared on everyone’s phone. I might have a tendencies to buy the product as if most of my friends says its good, then chances are it is good. Thats just one of them.

    Have a good day.

  3. Yep! I agree and I think most of the actor, actress and musicians today are much helped by the social media in terms of gaining popularity although unfortunately some of them use it to create controversies. Beside thanking God (for sure), celebrities like for example Bieber, 1D, Ryan Higa, other YouTube celebrities etc. must also thank the social media cause without it they might not be as popular as they are now.

  4. In my opinion, social media has become a lifestyle. Most news and information are found online, and people can quickly share it to their significant others through social media. It is positive when people know when is the limit to interact in social media and keep maintaining relations with people ‘offline’, and it will be negative if people cannot really live the reality. For example, we cannot deny that nowadays even a family will be busy with their gadgets when having dinner together rather than sharing their daily activities to other family members. So I think the plus and minus of social media depends on us personally.

    Cheers!

  5. Today, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested
to see if it can survive a 30 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation.
My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off topic but I had to share
it with someone! – Link building service.

  6. I believe what you posted was very logical. However, what
about this? suppose you added a little content? I ain’t suggesting your
information is not solid, however suppose you added a headline to possibly get people’s attention? I mean Introduction: Social Media IS
our society. | Social Media and the Self is a little vanilla.
You should look at Yahoo’s home page and see how they create article titles to get people interested.
You might add a related video or a picture or two to grab readers interested
about everything’ve got to say. Just my opinion, it might make your blog a little
    livelier.
